With great pleasure I want to thank Mr. Howard Stringer /
Surrey The
Reinette
Apple “Freiherr von Berlepsch” Named in honour of Dr. Hans Herrmann Freiherr von Berlepsch, President of the Rhine Province of Duesseldorf (1884-1890) and later Imperial State Minister for Trade and Industry (1890-1896).
Provenance : Germany about 1880, the
result of a cross between Reinette d’Ananas and Ribston
Pippin by Diedrich
Uhlhorn, junior, of Grevenbroich in North Rhine Westphalia.
Reckoned to be one of his best seedlings. Size : medium, 60-70 mm. wide, 50-60 mm. high. Shape : Round-conical,
regular, typically with 5
narrow but prominent ribs arising evenly from the basin. Stem cavity : moderately deep, funnel shaped, often narrow, covered with bright brown gleaming russet.
Stem : ½-1½ cm. long, woody, club-like thickening at end,
fleshy bud-like swelling on one side, downy. Basin : fairly wide, rather
shallow, ribbed, uneven, with russet marbling. Eye : closed or half open. The sepals
narrow, of medium length, brown. Skin, Colour : smooth, often a
little
rough, dry. Ground colour greenish-yellow to
yellow, with a characteristic marbled and striped brownish red flush
covering from ¾ to the whole fruit. Lenticels numerous, fine, fairly
inconspicuous, light brown. Floral tube : funnel-shaped
or triangular, broad and short. Stamens median. Core line : medium size,
obovate, distant. The axis forms an elliptical wide hollow. The cell
walls are wide, rounded
towards the eye, tufted. Seeds : large, broad accuminate,
chestnut brown with darker edges, well developed. Flesh, flavour : creamy-white, firm,
crisp, very juicy, refreshing, intensely flavoured and of very high
Vitamin C content. Storage :
ripe early January – early April. One of the few varieties which keep
its flavour
over the major portion of its storage period. Liable to shrivel in store
but does not suffer from internal browning. Suitable for 1 degree
Centigrade storage. In some years can taste bitter towards the end of
its season. Tree : it forms a close branched,
spherical head. Moderately vigorous, but often not sufficiently so.
Demands good soil and a warm situation, otherwise it can suffer from
canker and leaf-tip browning. Liable to pre-harvest fruit drop and
should not be picked too late. Can be damaged by sulphur, copper and
Captan sprays. Blossoms mid-season. Pollen good. A very valuable cultivar, but only to be grown in warm situations. Erklärung für alle in dieser Homepage angebrachten links: Gemäß Urteil vom 12.
