The study of birds and the bird protection movement was started by 6 Japanese noblemen, members of the Emperor's family, after the Meiji Restoration in Japan.
Before Dr. Seinosuke Uchida (1884-1975) published book "Ornithology"in 1917, two scholars mentioned about nest box: Mr. Hisakazu Nakagawa introduced nest box which was adapted for the size of a bird with picture in 1901. Then, Dr.Yoshinao Niijima also introduced a nest box and size of doorway of nest box in 1903."
Baron Berlepsch published the first edition of "Der gesamte Vogelschutz" in 1899. I guess that two scholars studied about nest boxes from Baron Berlepsch's book. However, I can not find a document about their report
yet.
1916 was an important year for "nest box install movement in Japan. The first nest box which was learned from Baron Berlepsch was installed by Dr.Uchida in a practice forest at the agricultural and forestry college of MORIOKA,IWATE,JAPAN in 1916
Dr.Uchida introduced "Baron Berlepsch's works "in his book "Ornithology" in 1917. The book was revised and published in 1924. However, an introduction about Baron Berlepsch's work did not revised at all.
Dr.Uchida visited Baron Berlepsch at Seebach. After he returned to Japan, he published a booklet titled "How to make a nest box" in 1927.
Showa Emperor (1901-1989) who loved birds and was eager for wild bird protection instructed Dr.Uchid to install the bird box in the garden of the Imperial Palace in 1928. That was based on a nest box designed by Baron Berlepsch
Dr.Uchida was called "a father of nest box install movement in Japan"
After the second world war, Japanese people stopped to install nest boxes into forests. In Japan, nest boxes were used for a breeding of birds that eat a pest which damages
forest. People used an insecticide for protection of forest in stead of bird's
help.
In U.S.A., a nest box is called birdhouse. Bird house is a guest house for bird - a feathered friend. We can see many pretty birdhouse in
U.S.A. Birdhouse is a symbol of coexistence of human being and bird and nature.
My book "Bird house - Paradise for Bird" was written to aim to coexistence of human being and bird. Bird is not a servant who eats a pest that damages forest.
The same birdhouse design has been used in Japan for the past 90 years, a very simple hut like structure. However, birdhouse around the world have greatly changed and progressed. They are beautifully crafted and have become more like residences for the birds. Now one can invite a bird to his handmade birdhouse and the feeder become a lovely backyard dining table for his guest!
In order to keep clean life, we should not use a lot of hazardous medicine. Birds protect our gardens and forests from a pest that damages gardens and
forests.
In Japan, people say that bird does not like colored nest box. I made hundreds of colored bird houses and different type's bird houses. Bird liked every type of birdhouse. We should prepare a birdhouse in town. They are suffered from the lack of
birdhouses.
German people build a rational and functional nest box for bird and people of U.S.A. build a beautiful and interesting bird house for bird and
themselves.
Birds give us a comfort and peace. Our feathered friends live together with us forever. Birdhouse is a symbol of coexistence of bird and human
being.
